Does Efflorescence and Other Roof Discoloration Affect the Functioning of Your Roof?

November 26, 2024

Have you noticed a whitish film or chalky patches on your concrete roof tiles? Perhaps you’ve noticed black streaks on your roof. Do these or other types of discoloration cause serious roof issues and how can the problem be fixed?

How Does Efflorescence Affect My Roof?

Efflorescence is a natural process that happens with concrete products, including roof tiles, and presents as a white film or chalky patches on the roof. It’s simply a chemical reaction between the lime in the cement and carbon dioxide in the air. This reaction can cause a white, crystalline deposit to form on the surface of the tiles. It can appear as a whitish haze or in concentrated patches.

The good news is that efflorescence doesn’t affect the strength, durability, or energy efficiency of your roof. Your roof will continue to perform beautifully and protect your home for years to come. Rainwater and carbon dioxide will naturally wash away the chalky residue over time, revealing the original color of your tiles.

Although efflorescence itself isn’t dangerous, it can lead to moisture problems that can cause mold growth or structural damage, so it may be a wise idea to get a roof inspection if you suspect moisture issues.

Other Types of Roof Discoloration

Algae growth may also cause also discoloration on roofs, but it results in brown or black streaks on a rooftop. Algae may be mistaken for soot, dirt, or tree droppings, most of which typically produce only localized discoloration.

Dark streaks, or roof discoloration caused by algae, happens most in areas exposed to warm, humid conditions. It is most widespread in the eastern United States and is commonly found on roofs with northern exposure.

Once attached to a shingled roof, roof algae feeds on the dead organic matter used in the manufacturing process of asphalt shingles. As the algae breaks down the shingle, the ceramic granules protecting the surface of the shingle are loosened and begin to fall off.

Algae is different from efflorescence because not only are these roof stains ugly, but if they are not treated, the roof algae will reduce the life of your roof, diminish your home’s curb appeal, and in extreme cases, increase your home cooling expenses.

How do I Remove Streaks on my Roof?

It is important to keep your roof clean. A clean and maintained roof helps to increase the lifespan of your roofing and keep the outside of your home looking nice. High pressure washing is not recommended, however, as these techniques can damage the integrity of the roof and cause harm to siding, brick, windows and gutters. Even after they’ve dried, these chemicals can leave a residue that can harm children, landscaping, and pets. Cleaning it yourself is not recommended either, for safety reasons. The best solution is to call in the professionals!
